Prepare

Today is Tuesday, 11th of March, the seventh day of Lent. As we continue to follow Jesus through the readings of Lent, let us carve out a time and space to be still before Him.

Psalm Reading

The appointed Psalm for today is Psalm 44. We will reflect on verses 20 to 26.

20 If we had forgotten the name of our God
    or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
21 would not God discover this?
    For he knows the secrets of the heart.
22 Yet for your sake we are killed all the day long;
    we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

23 Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord?
    Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever!
24 Why do you hide your face?
    Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?
25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust;
    our belly clings to the ground.
26 Rise up; come to our help!
    Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!

Reflection: Did you know that many of the Psalms are laments? The Bible encourages us to express honestly our deepest griefs and sorrows. God can handle it. Yes, the God of the Bible is familiar with, and unafraid of, the entire range of our human emotions. He gifts us with the Psalms, to give voice to the breadth and depth of how we feel, or more precisely — how we think we (should) feel, how we actually, really feel, and then how we wish to feel in the context of a faithful covenant relationship with Himself. For this God truly knows the secrets of our hearts and is ever ready to steer us through the storm of overwhelming emotions into the safe harbour of Peace.

Scripture Reading

The New Testament Reading for today is John 5:19-29. Here we read verses 25 to 29:

25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Reflection: The Son of Man forgets not. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Not even Death can erase the evil done. Nor cover up the ensuing suffering, as if they never happened. No, the Son of God is Just. Because He is Just, we have reason to continue doing good, standing up to evil and holding out hope. Knowing that One Day, He will right all that is wrong. He will bring everything to its full and proper closure. He will wipe away every tear from our eyes, for the former things would be no more.

Collect

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, grant us
Courage to face our inner demons;
Courage to remember and not forget;
Courage to confess and not suppress;
Courage to bring to You all of our emotions,
mis-perceptions, and non-understandings;
So that we may find at last
Real forgiveness,
True freedom and
Peace enduring;
through Jesus Christ Your Son our Lord. Amen.
