6th May – The Spirit of Wisdom
Audio
Today is Tuesday, the 6th of May. Let us be still in His presence.
We begin with this collect:
Almighty and everlasting Father,
we thank you that you have brought us safely to the beginning of this day.
Keep us from falling into sin or running into danger;
order us in all our doings;
and guide us to do always what is right in your eyes:
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
We praise the Lord in the words of Psalm 100:
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
2 Serve the Lord with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!
3 Know that the Lord, he is God!
It is he who made us, and we are his;[a]
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him; bless his name!
5 For the Lord is good;
his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.
We continue with the Scripture Reading from the Book of Ephesians. We read chapter 1, verses 15 to 23.
15 For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him,18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
Reflection
Having opened his letter with rich, God-glorifying praise, St. Paul now turns to prayer. But what, exactly, is he praying for?
At the heart of his prayer, St. Paul is asking that we might receive spiritual revelation—something that only the Holy Spirit can give. He is praying for the eyes of our hearts to be enlightened, so we may truly see and understand.
It’s possible to grasp the doctrines of our faith intellectually, to articulate them with theological precision, and to sing them with conviction in our worship—whether through hymns or modern songs. We may use the right words, repeat familiar phrases, and even feel comforted by them.
And yet, our hearts can remain distant. The truths we profess may not take root in us. We may live them only partially—or perceive them “dimly,” as through a fogged lens. Like trying to hold onto a slippery eel, we find the truth difficult to grasp and keep hold of without the Spirit’s help.
So, will we open our hearts to the Holy Spirit? In humility and surrender, will we let Him speak? Only He can make the truths of God’s Word come alive in us, in every season of our lives.
Reflection and Journaling
Throughout Christian history, believers have practiced journaling as a form of meditation—reflecting deeply on Scripture and recording what God reveals. Once done on parchment, now more often digitally, journaling remains a vital way to engage with God’s Word.
We invite you to develop this meaningful habit. In response to the passage above, consider:
What is my response? What will I do with it?
What is the Lord revealing about Himself?
What is He saying to me personally?
We end with the Collect of the Day:
Almighty Father,
who in your great mercy gladdened the disciples with the sight of the risen Lord:
give us such knowledge of his presence with us,
that we may be strengthened and sustained by his risen life
and serve you continually in righteousness and truth;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
Holy Spirit, Living Breath Of God (Hymn 318) | Phil Webb & the Grace Community Church Congregation
Holy Spirit, living breath of God
Breathe new life into my willing soul
Bring the presence of the risen Lord
To renew my heart and make me whole
Cause Your Word to come alive in me
Give me faith for what I cannot see
Give me passion for Your purity
Holy Spirit, breathe new life in me
Holy Spirit, come abide within
May Your joy be seen in all I do
Love enough to cover every sin
In each thought and deed and attitude
Kindness to the greatest and the least
Gentleness that sows the path of peace
Turn my strivings into works of grace
Breath of God, show Christ in all I do
Holy Spirit, from creation’s birth
Giving life to all that God has made
Show Your power once again on earth
Cause Your church to hunger for your ways
Let the fragrance of our prayers arise
Lead us on the road of sacrifice
That in unity the face of Christ
Will be clear for all the world to see
