Ascension Day

Audio

Today is Thursday, 29th of May. It is also Ascension Day.

We open with this prayer:

O Lord, open our lips;
and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Let us worship the Lord.
All praise to his name.

The Psalm appointed for today is Psalm 110:

110 The Lord says to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.”

The Lord sends forth from Zion
    your mighty scepter.
    Rule in the midst of your enemies!
Your people will offer themselves freely
    on the day of your power,
    in holy garments;
from the womb of the morning,
    the dew of your youth will be yours.
The Lord has sworn
    and will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever
    after the order of Melchizedek.”

The Lord is at your right hand;
    he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
He will execute judgment among the nations,
    filling them with corpses;
he will shatter chiefs
    over the wide earth.
He will drink from the brook by the way;
    therefore he will lift up his head.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.

The Scripture Reading is taken from Hebrews 7: 22-28

22 This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.

23 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

26 For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. 28 For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.

Reflection

Mark 16:19 declares, “The Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.”

This truth is also affirmed in the Apostles’ Creed, where we confess: “He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.”

To be seated is not merely a description of posture—it is a declaration of authority. When a judge is seated in court or a monarch takes the throne at a coronation, it signals the beginning of their rule. Likewise, when Christ sat down at the right hand of the Father, it was not an end to His work, but the beginning of His exalted reign.

From that position, He continues His ministry—not as a suffering servant or crucified Saviour, but as our glorified High Priest and Intercessor. The once-for-all sacrifice has been made, never to be repeated. Yet His priestly role continues as He intercedes for us before the Father.

At Gethsemane and Calvary, He stood in the gap for us. Now, He does the same—no longer kneeling in the garden of darkness or hanging on a cross of despair, but seated in radiant glory and sovereign authority.

The resurrection affirms that He lives.
The ascension affirms that He reigns.
His session at the right hand affirms that He intercedes.

Will you entrust your concerns—personal, relational, and global—into the hands of the One who reigns and intercedes?

Will you trust that Christ is not only risen, but ruling?

Collect

Grant, we pray, almighty God,
that as we believe your only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into the heavens,
so we in heart and mind may also ascend and with him continually dwell;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

In closing, be blessed by this hymn, All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name.
