Endurance
Let us allow the Spirit of God to fill our lives afresh. Ask Him to re-centre our scattered hearts.
We begin by joining the Psalmist to proclaim in the words of Psalm 119:1-5
Blessed are those whose way is blameless,
who walk in the law of the Lord!
2 Blessed are those who keep his testimonies,
who seek him with their whole heart,
3 who also do no wrong,
but walk in his ways!
4 You have commanded your precepts
to be kept diligently.
5 Oh that my ways may be steadfast
in keeping your statutes!
As I begin this day, help me O Lord, to walk in your ways and be diligent to honor you in all I do. Amen.
The Scripture Reading is Romans 5:1-5:
1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
Reflection
“Endurance produces character.”
This brief passage carries deep truth.
We are justified by faith. We have peace with God through Jesus Christ. We stand in grace, and we live in hope of sharing in God’s glory. And yes—God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.
God has done so much. So we might ask: Is there anything required of us? Is human effort or response still necessary?
One word rises as the answer: endurance.
Jesus said in Matthew 24:13, “But the one who endures to the end will be saved.”
So hang on.
Be patient.
Stay faithful.
Endure.
The words may vary, but the call is the same. Again and again, Scripture reminds us: endurance matters—because endurance produces character.
God is not only interested in saving us, but in shaping us. He cares deeply about who we are becoming.
This life is not random. It is preparatory. It is a season of refining, a proving ground for eternity. The way we live—how we steward our time, use our gifts, navigate relationships, and even treat our bodies—shapes who we are becoming.
We are becoming the kind of people who will live forever.
So don’t despise difficulty. Don’t waste pain. The hardest seasons often shape the strongest souls. These trials form something in us that ease never could.
The God who loves you beyond comprehension is also forming you—into someone strong, faithful, and prepared for the life to come.
We end with praying this Collect
“O God, our King, by the resurrection of your Son,
you have given us hope of everlasting life:
Keep us steadfast in this faith,
that we may evermore be defended from all adversities;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.” Amen
Be blessed by this uplifting song written by Bjarne Johnsen and Oliver Tangen and sung here by Dorothy Cinnamon.
Does it often feel like progress here is slow?
Hesitant, you wonder now, “Can I reach the goal?”
Don’t forget faith’s heroes; they have entered in.
Patience, battles we must have, the crown of life to win.
Patiently enduring still, don’t grow weary, friend.
Looking at the author of our faith – you’ll take courage there.
You who gladly carry burdens from the Lord.
Caring, serving in His church, sharing God’s good word.
Or at home you’re serving, days can look the same.
You were pressing on with hope and then new trials came.
Patiently enduring still, you will reach the goal.
Formed and moulded by God’s loving hand, yours the victor’s crown.
Freed from sin and bondage, as before God’s face
You are gaining riches within that sacred place.
And when the bride’s presented to our father, God,
Then her life will be revealed; the pathway that she trod.
Patiently enduring still, don’t grow weary friend.
Looking at the author of our faith – you’ll take courage there.
Patiently enduring still, you will reach the goal.
Formed and moulded by God’s loving hand, yours the victor’s crown.

About This Daily Devotion
This weekday devotion is drawn from the Morning Office and is part of a project initiated by Revd Canon Terry Wong, with contributions from clergy and members across various parishes. Each entry includes selected readings from the appointed Psalm and another Scripture passage, accompanied by a reflection and prayer. An audio option is also available, often ending with a hymn or song. We encourage you to both read and listen.
Our aim is to help Anglicans engage more deeply with our rich liturgical tradition, while meeting the devotional needs of today’s believers. This project began on Ash Wednesday 2025 and is offered on weekdays only.
