2 July – God’s way or the highway!

Reflection: Keith Lim

God’s way or the highway!

Today is Wednesday, 2 July 2025. Let us quieten our hearts and be still in the presence of God. As we give thanks to God for yet another day of His grace and mercy, let us read from:

Psalm 119:57-68

57 The Lord is my portion;
    I promise to keep your words.
58 I entreat your favor with all my heart;
    be gracious to me according to your promise.
59 When I think on my ways,
    I turn my feet to your testimonies;
60 I hasten and do not delay
    to keep your commandments.
61 Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me,
    I do not forget your law.
62 At midnight I rise to praise you,
    because of your righteous rules.
63 I am a companion of all who fear you,
    of those who keep your precepts.
64 The earth, O Lord, is full of your steadfast love;
    teach me your statutes!

65 You have dealt well with your servant,
    O Lord, according to your word.
66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge,
    for I believe in your commandments.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,
    but now I keep your word.
68 You are good and do good;
    teach me your statutes.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.

Scripture reading for today is taken from Job 22:21-30

     21“Agree with God, and be at peace;
        thereby good will come to you.
    22Receive instruction from his mouth,
        and lay up his words in your heart.
    23If you return to the Almighty you will be built up;
        if you remove injustice far from your tents,
    24if you lay gold in the dust,
        and gold of Ophir among the stones of the torrent-bed,
    25then the Almighty will be your gold
        and your precious silver.
    26For then you will delight yourself in the Almighty
        and lift up your face to God.
    27You will make your prayer to him, and he will hear you,
        and you will pay your vows.
    28You will decide on a matter, and it will be established for you,
        and light will shine on your ways.
    29For when they are humbled, you say, ‘It is because of pride’;
        but he saves the lowly.
    30He delivers even the one who is not innocent,
        who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”

Reflection

We have all heard and sung the famous song “My Way” by Frank Sinatra. This song glorifies the self by boldly and unashamedly proclaiming I am my own man, I make my own decisions and the finale, “I did it my way!”. The world today tells us to live life to the fullest, for ourselves, doing things our way, and not to follow others. Your life is yours to live.

Scripture, however, reminds us not to follow our ways, but to follow God’s way. Am I sure? Is it not my way better? More fun? I know myself better than anyone. Surely I know what is right for me.

Brothers and sisters, we cannot be more wrong. From my own experience, God’s way is the best. Several years ago, I was doing an online exam as it was during Covid. I was taking the test virtually at home in my study room. I was so tempted to refer to my textbooks secretly. After all, who can see and who can ever know. But I did not, and I still managed to pass the exam. It was not easy following God’s way, not to cheat and get a good grade.

When we follow God’s ways, it might most probably be uncomfortable; most likely, you will need to deny yourself of something you desire or want. On the extreme side, it might lead you to a season of trials and suffering. Take heart my brothers and sisters that you will find peace and joy as you follow God’s way and He will comfort and empower you as you obey Him.

Jeremiah 29:11 tells us

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Prayer

Let us listen and meditate on this song “Teach me thy way O Lord

Amen
