Voice: Hambali
Today is Wednesday, 16th of July. Let us pause to gather our scattered thoughts and focus our spirit on His presence.
We pray:
O Lord, open our lips;
and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
Let us worship the Lord.
All praise to his name.
We read Psalm 119:105-109
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.
106 I have sworn an oath and confirmed it,
to keep your righteous rules.
107 I am severely afflicted;
give me life, O Lord, according to your word!
108 Accept my freewill offerings of praise, O Lord,
and teach me your rules.
109 I hold my life in my hand continually,
but I do not forget your law.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.
Reflection
Wisdom in every stride
We often find ourselves anxious at the crossroads of life.
Should I study this course?
Should I take this job?
Is this the right relationship to pursue?
Wouldn’t it be easier if we could look into the future and see the outcomes of our decisions? We long for certainty. We wish for clarity.
Yet in Psalm 119:105, the psalmist shifts our focus.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
He is not asking to see the entire future.
He is asking to see clearly enough to walk rightly—to choose the morally and spiritually upright way. His concern is not about predicting outcomes, but about living with wisdom and integrity.
The truth is, God has not created us to live by crystal balls. He has not designed life to be controlled by foresight into every detail. But neither has He left us in the dark.
He gives us something better:
A living Word,
A guiding light,
A wisdom that forms within us as we spend time in Scripture, prayer, and communion with Him.
As we grow in God’s Word—reading it, meditating on it, and allowing it to shape us—we develop what Proverbs calls discernment: a cultivated spiritual intuition. It’s this wisdom that helps us choose rightly, even when the road ahead is uncertain.
We may not always know where the path leads. But may God’s Word is light our paths and strengthen every stride with wisdom.
We end with this collect:
O God, by whom the meek are guided in judgment,
and light riseth up in darkness for the godly:
Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties,
the grace to ask what thou wouldest have us to do,
that the Spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices,
and that in thy light we may see light,
and in thy straight path may not stumble;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
In closing, be blessed by this song, Thy Word
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet
And a light unto my path
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet
And a light unto my path
When I feel afraid I think I’ve lost my way
Still You’re there right beside me
Nothing will I fear as long as You are near
Please be near me ’til the end
I will not forget Your love for me and yet My heart forever is wandering
Jesus be my guide and hold me to Your side I will love You ’til the end
You have the words of life Where else would I go who else would I follow
In You I’m satisfied So open my eyes I want to see (You)

About This Daily Devotion
This weekday devotion is drawn from the Morning Office and is part of a project initiated by Revd Canon Terry Wong, with contributions from clergy and members across various parishes. Each entry includes selected readings from the appointed Psalm and another Scripture passage, accompanied by a reflection and prayer. An audio option is also available, often ending with a hymn or song. We encourage you to both read and listen.
Our aim is to help Anglicans engage more deeply with our rich liturgical tradition, while meeting the devotional needs of today’s believers. This project began on Ash Wednesday 2025 and is offered on weekdays only.
