Voice: Jennifer
Today is Friday, 1st of August. The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence is kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and for ever.
Amen.
We join in this prayer of David from the cave, Psalm 142
With my voice I cry out to the Lord;
with my voice I plead for mercy to the Lord.
2 I pour out my complaint before him;
I tell my trouble before him.
3 When my spirit faints within me,
you know my way!
In the path where I walk
they have hidden a trap for me.
4 Look to the right and see:
there is none who takes notice of me;
no refuge remains to me;
no one cares for my soul.
5 I cry to you, O Lord;
I say, “You are my refuge,
my portion in the land of the living.”
6 Attend to my cry,
for I am brought very low!
Deliver me from my persecutors,
for they are too strong for me!
7 Bring me out of prison,
that I may give thanks to your name!
The righteous will surround me,
for you will deal bountifully with me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.
2 Corinthians 9: 12-15
He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.
11 You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. 12 For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. 13 By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, 14 while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. 15Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!
This is the Word of the Lord
Thanks be to God
The Power to get Wealth
God is behind our entire food chain—from the garden to the table, from seed to bread. From the sowing of crops to the baking of loaves, He is our ultimate Provider. Human hands are involved at every step, of course—but the biblical perspective is to recognise and give thanks to our Creator who makes it all possible.
In the same way, God is the One who enables the flow of finances in our lives. He enriches us so that we may be “generous in every way” (v 11). This ministry of giving does more than meet practical needs—it overflows in thanksgiving to God.
Even if money doesn’t fall from the sky but comes through others in the church, the recipients will still give thanks to God. In this same passage, Paul speaks of how he and his companions are spreading the Gospel. The financial gifts sent to them were not just charity—they were Kingdom investments.
Such generosity builds lasting bonds among believers—even across distance (v.14). Giving is not merely a transaction; it is a relationship-builder in the family of God.
In a city like Singapore, where there is so much material wealth, these biblical perspectives are essential. This is why we say grace before meals. Why we tithe or pledge. Why we give to missions. For those who generate considerable wealth, these practices help us remain humble—aware that even the ability to create wealth is itself a divine gift. As Deuteronomy 8:18 says:
“You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.”
Will you take a moment today to thank the Lord for His “inexpressible gift” (2 Cor 9:15)? And will you consider how you might reflect His generosity today?
Be blessed by this song, Give Thanks

About This Daily Devotion
This weekday devotion is drawn from the Morning Office and is part of a project initiated by Revd Canon Terry Wong, with contributions from clergy and members across various parishes. Each entry includes selected readings from the appointed Psalm and another Scripture passage, accompanied by a reflection and prayer. An audio option is also available, often ending with a hymn or song. We encourage you to both read and listen.
Our aim is to help Anglicans engage more deeply with our rich liturgical tradition, while meeting the devotional needs of today’s believers. This project began on Ash Wednesday 2025 and is offered on weekdays only.
