Voice: Hambali
Today is Monday, 4th of August. Take a moment to be still in His presence.
We pray:
Almighty and everlasting Father,
we thank you that you have brought us safely to the beginning of this day.
Keep us from falling into sin or running into danger;
order us in all our doings;
and guide us to do always what is right in your eyes:
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Psalm 2:1-8
Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.”
4 He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.
5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath,
and terrify them in his fury, saying,
6 “As for me, I have set my King
on Zion, my holy hill.”
7 I will tell of the decree:
The Lord said to me, “You are my Son;
today I have begotten you.
8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.
2 Corinthians 11: 1-6
1 I wish you would bear with me in a little foolishness. Do bear with me!
2 For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.
3 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
4 For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough.
5 Indeed, I consider that I am not in the least inferior to these super-apostles.
6 Even if I am unskilled in speaking, I am not so in knowledge; indeed, in every way we have made this plain to you in all things.
This is the Word of the Lord
Thanks be to God
Reflection
Stay Faithful
You may have heard people say that many modern Christians approach church with a consumerist mindset. “What can I gain from this church?” “Do I enjoy the preaching?” “Is the pastor attentive to me?” “Is the service too long?” These are not wrong questions in themselves—but they reveal a shift toward personal preference over spiritual formation.
Interestingly, this attitude is not new. It existed even in the early church. In 2 Corinthians, Paul warns about “super apostles”—eloquent, charismatic leaders who preached a different gospel. These figures were impressive enough that some believers were swayed. Paul, in contrast, was more ordinary in appearance and speech. He had to remind them: It was I who first brought you the Gospel. I gave birth to your faith and nurtured you in Christ.
His concern was not ego—it was love. He feared they were being led astray from their “sincere and pure devotion to Christ.” He had invested deeply in them. But did they feel the same toward him, their spiritual father?
In a compact and prosperous city like ours, with over a thousand churches, it’s easy to adopt a mindset of convenience. We can drift from one church to another, always looking for better services, shorter sermons, or more “vibes.” But in the process, we risk forfeiting deeper spiritual friendships and the grace of long-term community. We may overlook those who have faithfully shaped our faith. And we may let our guard down on the need for sound, biblical teaching—choosing instead what makes us feel comfortable.
Paul’s plea still speaks to us today. In 2 Corinthians 6:11–13, he writes:
“We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians; our heart is wide open. You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted in your own affections. In return (I speak as to children), widen your hearts also.”
Perhaps the solution is not to search for a new gospel or a new church—but to open our hearts again. To remember those who first pointed us to Christ. To honour those who have loved us faithfully, even if imperfectly. And to remain committed, not as consumers, but as beloved children in the family of God.
We pray the Collect of the Day:
Lord of all power and might,
the author and giver of all good things:
graft in our hearts the love of your name,
increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness,
and of your great mercy keep us in the same;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen
Be blessed by this song, Dream Small by Josh Wilson.
It’s a mama singin’ songs about the Lord
It’s a daddy spendin’ family time, the world says he cannot afford
These simple moments change the world
It’s a pastor at a tiny little church
40 years of lovin’ on the broken and the hurt
These simple moments change the world
Dream small
Don’t buy the lie, you’ve got to do it all
Just let Jesus use you where you are
One day at a time
Live well
Lovin’ God and others as yourself
Find little ways where only you can help
With His great love
A tiny rock can make a giant fall
Dream small
It’s visiting the widow down the street
Or dancin’ on a Friday with your friend with special needs
These simple moments change the world
Of course, there’s nothin’ wrong with bigger dreams
Just don’t miss the minutes on your way to bigger things, no
‘Cause these simple moments change the world
So dream small
Don’t buy the lie, you’ve got to do it all
Just let Jesus use you where you are
One day at a time
Live well
Lovin’ God and others as yourself
Find little ways where only you can help
With His great love
A tiny rock can make a giant fall
So dream small
Keep lovin’, keep servin’, keep listenin’, keep learnin’
Keep prayin’, keep hopin’, keep seekin’, keep searchin’
Add up the small things and watch them grow bigger
The God who does all things makes oceans from rivers
So dream small
Don’t buy the lie, you’ve got to do it all
Just let Jesus use you where you are
One day at a time
Live well
Lovin’ God and others as yourself (others as yourself)
Find little ways where only you can help (only you can help)
With His great love (his great love)
A tiny rock can make a giant fall
Yeah, five loaves and two fish can feed them all
So dream small
Dream small
Mm-mm

About This Daily Devotion
This weekday devotion is drawn from the Morning Office and is part of a project initiated by Revd Canon Terry Wong, with contributions from clergy and members across various parishes. Each entry includes selected readings from the appointed Psalm and another Scripture passage, accompanied by a reflection and prayer. An audio option is also available, often ending with a hymn or song. We encourage you to both read and listen.
Our aim is to help Anglicans engage more deeply with our rich liturgical tradition, while meeting the devotional needs of today’s believers. This project began on Ash Wednesday 2025 and is offered on weekdays only.
