Voice: Doreen
Today is Wednesday, 24th of September. Let us pause to gather our scattered thoughts and focus our spirit on His presence.
Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God.
Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much the devices and desires
of our own hearts.
We have offended against your holy laws.
We have left undone those things which we ought to have done,
and we have done those things which we ought not
to have done; and apart from your grace, there is no health in us.
O Lord, have mercy upon us.
Spare all those who confess their faults.
Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises
declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord.
And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life,
to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.
We read Psalm 100, the Jubilate.
1 O shout to the Lord In triumph all the earth: serve the Lord with gladness and come before his face with songs of Joy.
2 Know that the Lord he is God: It Is he who has made us and we are his we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
3 Come into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise: give thanks to him and bless his holy name.
4 For the Lord is good, his loving mercy is forever: his faithfulness throughout all generations.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.
1 Chronicles 15:16-24
16 David also commanded the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their brothers as the singers who should play loudly on musical instruments, on harps and lyres and cymbals, to raise sounds of joy. 17 So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel; and of his brothers Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari, their brothers, Ethan the son of Kushaiah; 18 and with them their brothers of the second order, Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and the gatekeepers Obed-edom and Jeiel. 19 The singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were to sound bronze cymbals; 20 Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were to play harps according to Alamoth; 21 but Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were to lead with lyres according to the Sheminith. 22 Chenaniah, leader of the Levites in music, should direct the music, for he understood it. 23 Berechiah and Elkanah were to be gatekeepers for the ark.24 Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, should blow the trumpets before the ark of God. Obed-edom and Jehiah were to be gatekeepers for the ark.
Are you enlisted?
There are many lists of names in the Scriptures. Some names are famous, but most belong to people we might consider minor or unimportant.
Take the tongue-twisting list in 1 Chronicles 15. To us, these names may seem forgettable, yet each one was remembered and recorded in His Word. It is another reminder that God knows us by name, and what we do for Him matters.
Here we find musicians, ushers, and even “security guards.” The temple music team was a large one, and the harpists, lyre-players, cymbalists, and trumpeters must have been very skilled. We may not have heard of “Chenaniah,” but he was the music director, chosen “because he understood music.”
Then there were the gatekeepers of the ark. Their task required extreme care and reverence. Earlier chapters tell us of the disaster that came when the ark was handled carelessly. These men were chosen not only for their diligence but also because their purity and devotion to God were known by others. Among them was Obed-edom, remembered because the Ark had rested safely in his house for three months.
When you really think about it, it doesn’t matter whether our names are remembered by people. What matters most is our willingness to serve God faithfully with whatever gifts and talents He has given us. We may be just one among many. Even the most well-known pastors, inventors or politicians eventually will become just another name on a list.
But the Lord never forgets. He knows you by name. He treasures you. His love is such that every individual matters deeply, even though His list of names is infinite.
And above all, there is one list where your name must be found: the Book of Life.
So, ask yourself today:
How can I serve God with my gifts and talents?
Am I serving God faithfully, even if unnoticed?
Am I content to be one among many, known and loved by Him?
Is my name written in His Book of Life?
We end with this Prayer of St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090 – 1153):
Jesus, the very thought of you with sweetness fills the breast;
But sweeter far your face to see, And in your presence rest.
Nor voice can sing, nor heart can frame,
Nor can the memory find a sweeter sound than your blessed Name,
O Savior of mankind! O hope of every contrite heart, O joy of all the meek, To those who fall, how kind you are! How good to those who seek!
O Jesus, light of all below, fount of living fire, surpassing all the joys we know, and all we can desire.
Abide with us, and let your light shine, Lord, on every heart;
Dispel the darkness of our night; And joy to all impart. Amen.
Be blessed by this song, The Called
Sometime i think i have to be perfect for God to use me.
I think i have to know it all, never stumble, never fall.
I focus on all my inadequacies, instead of what Christ can do through me.
I forget to trust and i can’t quite see.
That God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called
and he’ll supply your every need, we choose to give him all.
You can be too big for God to use but you’ll never be too small,
’cause God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies his called.
There is no one too young to serve, no one too old
no clay too hardend for our father to mold
He has a place designed for you, that no one else can fill
and he will give you what you need, when you choose to do his will.
So don’t hinder God with what you say you can’t do.
Just be willing and ready to be used.
Go where he leads with a heart that is willing.
No telling what he’ll do through you.

About This Daily Devotion
This weekday devotion is drawn from the Morning Office and is part of a project initiated by Revd Canon Terry Wong, with contributions from clergy and members across various parishes. Each entry includes selected readings from the appointed Psalm and another Scripture passage, accompanied by a reflection and prayer. An audio option is also available, often ending with a hymn or song. We encourage you to both read and listen.
Our aim is to help Anglicans engage more deeply with our rich liturgical tradition, while meeting the devotional needs of today’s believers. This project began on Ash Wednesday 2025 and is offered on weekdays only.
