Voice: Mylene
Today is Wednesday, 1st of October. As we enter into the fourth quarter of the year, let us pause to gather our scattered thoughts and focus our spirit on His presence.
We read the Venite:
1 O come, let us sing unto the Lord; let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.
2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving and show ourselves glad in him with psalms.
3 For the Lord is a great God and a great King above all gods.
4 In his hand are all the depths of the earth, and the heights of the hills are his also.
5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands prepared the dry land.
6 O come, let us worship and fall down, and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.
8 If only you would hear his voice today: for he comes to judge the earth.
9 He shall judge the world with righteousness: and the peoples with his truth.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.
1 Chronicles 29
1 And David the king said to all the assembly, “Solomon my son, whom alone God has chosen, is young and inexperienced, and the work is great, for the palace will not be for man but for the Lord God.
2 So I have provided for the house of my God, so far as I was able, the gold for the things of gold, the silver for the things of silver, and the bronze for the things of bronze, the iron for the things of iron, and wood for the things of wood, besides great quantities of onyx and stones for setting, antimony, colored stones, all sorts of precious stones and marble.
3 Moreover, in addition to all that I have provided for the holy house, I have a treasure of my own of gold and silver, and because of my devotion to the house of my God I give it to the house of my God:
4 3,000 talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and 7,000 talents of refined silver, for overlaying the walls of the house,
5 and for all the work to be done by craftsmen, gold for the things of gold and silver for the things of silver. Who then will offer willingly, consecrating himself today to the Lord?”
This is the Word of the Lord
Thanks be to God
What Will We Leave Behind?
Have you written a will yet? Perhaps you feel too young to do so. But for the rest of us, it’s something we eventually need to face — because one day, we will all pass on.
“You are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
— Genesis 3:19
This familiar refrain, spoken on Ash Wednesday as clergy place ashes on our foreheads, comes straight from Genesis. It reminds us that when our bodies return to dust, everything we have in this life will be left behind.
The real question is: What will that be?
A good answer does not lie in how much money or property we have accumulated. As followers of Jesus, our legacy must go beyond material possessions.
King David understood this well. As he prepared for the end of his life, he passed on a vision for God’s glory to the next generation. His heart was set on building a great House for the Lord. He said,
“The work is great, for the palace will not be for man but for the Lord God.”
— 1 Chronicles 29:1
David devoted all his treasures, resources, and influence toward this purpose. His vision was larger than his earthly life. If David had lived only for himself, he would have left behind only his wealth—nothing different from any other king. But by living for God’s glory, his legacy outlived him and shaped generations to come.
Do we have a vision for God’s glory? If we do, it will outlast us. We will live in ways that sow into the next generation, whether or not our names are remembered. What matters is that the effects of our faithfulness echo into the future.
Take a moment to give thanks for our forebears who lived faithfully and built up the life and mission of the Church in Singapore. You and I are beneficiaries of their obedience.
Now it is our turn to ask: What will we leave behind?
Will we bring this question before the Lord?
Will we seek His wisdom to live our lives well?
Will we invest in the future, so that when we are long gone, the seeds we planted will continue to bear life and fruitfulness?
We pray the Collect for the day:
God, who in generous mercy
sent the Holy Spirit upon your Church
in the burning fire of your love:
grant that your people
may be fervent in the fellowship of the gospel
that, always abiding in you,
they may be found steadfast in faith and active in service; «
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen
In closing, be blessed by this song, Benediction by Kaden Slay and Charity Gayle
May the Lord grant You peace
May His love shine down, love shine down
And meet your every need
And keep your feet from stumbling
And fix your eyes on the mark, on the prize
As you go may you rest in Christ
Receive His grace to love all men
In spite of all our differences
May your words be filled with life
That crumble walls of fear and pride
Take up the cross to serve the least and the lost
As you go be the hands of God
‘Cause He is your strength and your victory, yeah
He comes behind you and heals
He is the cup and the portion
Your banner and shield
So be released, be blessed, be free
Live and move as the Spirit breathes
As you go, go with God, go in peace

About This Daily Devotion
This weekday devotion is drawn from the Morning Office and is part of a project initiated by Revd Canon Terry Wong, with contributions from clergy and members across various parishes. Each entry includes selected readings from the appointed Psalm and another Scripture passage, accompanied by a reflection and prayer. An audio option is also available, often ending with a hymn or song. We encourage you to both read and listen.
Our aim is to help Anglicans engage more deeply with our rich liturgical tradition, while meeting the devotional needs of today’s believers. This project began on Ash Wednesday 2025 and is offered on weekdays only.
