2 Oct Thur – All Things Come from You

Voice: Keith Lim

Today is Thursday, 2nd of October.

As we start another day, let us observe a moment of silence.

We pray:

Blessed are you, creator of all,
to you be praise and glory for ever.
As your dawn renews the face of the earth
bringing light and life to all creation,
may we rejoice in this day you have made;
as we wake refreshed from the depths of sleep,
open our eyes to behold your presence
and strengthen our hands to do your will,
that the world may rejoice and give you praise.
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Amen

Psalm 37: 3-11

Trust in the Lord and do good;
    dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Take delight in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him and he will do this:
He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
    your vindication like the noonday sun.

Be still before the Lord
    and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when people succeed in their ways,
    when they carry out their wicked schemes.

Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;
    do not fret—it leads only to evil.
For those who are evil will be destroyed,
    but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.

10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more;
    though you look for them, they will not be found.
11 But the meek will inherit the land
    and enjoy peace and prosperity.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.

1 Chronicles 29: 10-14

10 Therefore David blessed the Lord in the presence of all the assembly. And David said: “Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever.
11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.
12 Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all.
13 And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.
14“But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you.

This is the Word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

All Things Come from You

“For all things come from you, and of your own do we give you.”
— 1 Chronicles 29:14

This familiar phrase from the Offertory Sentence in our Communion liturgy is drawn directly from 1 Chronicles 29:14. It beautifully captures the heart of Christian stewardship: everything we have ultimately belongs to the Lord.

This truth can be challenging to grasp in our modern era, which places strong emphasis on personal property rights and ownership. The prevailing idea is that what we possess is not common property but personal — especially if we have worked hard to earn it.

Yet this need not conflict with the biblical understanding of stewardship. While what we hold may be personal, we can still manage it as resources entrusted to us by God, not owned absolutely by us. In fact, a sense of personal ownership can actually heighten our sense of responsibility in using what has been given.

At the heart of this is the recognition that God is the source of all our abilities and opportunities. The strength to work, the skills we possess, and the chances we receive are all gifts of His grace. Even if we hold freehold property, our lives themselves are “leasehold.” We are given only a limited time to use the resources of life.

The Parable of the Talents reminds us of this reality. Responsible stewardship involves not merely giving, but multiplying what has been entrusted to us — using it fruitfully for the Master’s purposes.

If indeed all that we have belongs to the Lord, then this truth must continue to shape the way we view, use, and manage our possessions. Our time, talents, and resources are not ultimately ours to keep, but to steward wisely for God’s glory and the blessing of others.

We end with the Offertory Sentence:

Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power,
the glory, the splendour, and the majesty;
for everything in heaven and on earth Is yours.
All things come from you, and of your own do we give you.
Amen.

In closing be blessed by this classic hymn, All Things Bright and Beautiful

All things bright and beautiful,
all creatures great and small,
all things wise and wonderful,
the Lord God made them all.

Each little flow’r that opens,
each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colors,
He made their tiny wings. [Refrain]

The purple-headed mountain,
the river running by,
the sunset and the morning
that brightens up the sky. [Refrain]

The cold wind in the winter,
the pleasant summer sun,
the ripe fruits in the garden:
He made them every one. [Refrain]

He gave us eyes to see them,
and lips that we might tell
how great is God Almighty,
who has made all things well. [Refrain]
