Voice: Shivdas
Today is Friday, 10th of October. The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence is kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and for ever.
Amen.
We read Psalm 51:10-17
Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
so that sinners will turn back to you.
14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,
you who are God my Savior,
and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
15 Open my lips, Lord,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart
you, God, will not despise.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.
2 Chronicles 6:36-39
36 “When they sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin—and you become angry with them and give them over to the enemy, who takes them captive to a land far away or near; 37 and if they have a change of heart in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead with you in the land of their captivity and say, ‘We have sinned, we have done wrong and acted wickedly’; 38 and if they turn back to you with all their heart and soul in the land of their captivity where they were taken, and pray toward the land you gave their ancestors, toward the city you have chosen and toward the temple I have built for your Name; 39 then from heaven, your dwelling place, hear their prayer and their pleas, and uphold their cause. And forgive your people, who have sinned against you.
This is the Word of the Lord
Thanks be to God.
Then Hear from Heaven
The phrase “hear from heaven” is a constant refrain in Solomon’s prayer of dedication for the temple. No building or edifice, no matter how grand, can contain the presence of God. God’s throne is in heaven—not the temple—and this refrain is a heartfelt plea that He would listen to the cries of His people.
Whether it was sin that needed forgiveness, drought that needed rain, or a nation in distress, the hope was the same: that God would hear from heaven, forgive, and act on behalf of His people.
We also remember this phrase from the familiar verse in 2 Chronicles 7:14:
“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
These words are not a formula, but a covenant promise. God listens when His people turn their hearts toward Him in humility and prayer.
Are you going through a difficult season in your walk with the Lord?
Is there something you are asking the Lord for your church?
Are there issues weighing heavily on your heart as you consider where Singapore is heading spiritually?
Are you concerned for young people who need to encounter the love and reality of God in their lives?
In this season, will we take time to humble ourselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways? Will we do so not only for ourselves, but also on behalf of others?
Let us pray that God will once again “hear from heaven”—to forgive, restore, and bring His healing to our lives, our church, and our land.
We end with the Collect of the Day:
O Lord, we beseech you mercifully
to hear the prayers of your people who call upon you;
and grant that they may both perceive
and know what things they ought to do,
and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfil them;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Be blessed by this classic song, If My People
If My people
which are called by My name
shall humble themselves,
shall humble themselves and pray.
If My people which are called by My name
shall seek My face and turn from their wicked ways
Then will I hear from heaven
then will I hear from heaven,
Then will I hear and will forgive
forgive their sin.
If My people
which are called by My name
shall humble themselves,
shall humble themselves
and pray.
I will forgive their sin,
I will forgive their sin,
I will forgive their sin,
and heal their land.

About This Daily Devotion
This weekday devotion is drawn from the Morning Office and is part of a project initiated by Revd Canon Terry Wong, with contributions from clergy and members across various parishes. Each entry includes selected readings from the appointed Psalm and another Scripture passage, accompanied by a reflection and prayer. An audio option is also available, often ending with a hymn or song. We encourage you to both read and listen.
Our aim is to help Anglicans engage more deeply with our rich liturgical tradition, while meeting the devotional needs of today’s believers. This project began on Ash Wednesday 2025 and is offered on weekdays only.
