Voice: Keith Lim
Today is Thursday, 9th of October. Whether you are in your room, driving or taking public transport, take a moment to be aware of His presence wherever you are.
We pray:
Blessed are you, creator of all,
to you be praise and glory for ever.
As your dawn renews the face of the earth
bringing light and life to all creation,
may we rejoice in this day you have made;
as we wake refreshed from the depths of sleep,
open our eyes to behold your presence
and strengthen our hands to do your will,
that the world may rejoice and give you praise.
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Amen
We pray in the words of Psalm 63
You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.
2 I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
3 Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
4 I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
6 On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.
7 Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.
8 I cling to you;
your right hand upholds me.
9 Those who want to kill me will be destroyed;
they will go down to the depths of the earth.
10 They will be given over to the sword
and become food for jackals.
11 But the king will rejoice in God;
all who swear by God will glory in him,
while the mouths of liars will be silenced.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.
I Thirst for You
Have you ever been thirsty before? I mean, really thirsty.
Here in Singapore, if we need water, we simply turn on the tap. Whenever we feel thirsty, cool drinking water is just a short walk away. Thirst is a need that we can easily and quickly satisfy throughout the day. This is one reason why we may never truly experience thirst in the way others do in poorer countries, or in places struck by famine.
Or like the psalmist, who experienced prolonged thirst in a desert — “a dry and parched land where there is no water.”
When you are truly thirsty, your mouth and tongue become dry and sticky. Saliva is scarce; even swallowing can hurt. Your throat aches and every breath feels rasping. Your concentration weakens. Movements become sluggish. Headaches or dizziness may set in. Emotionally, thirst can bring anxiety, desperation, even panic — a kind of inner cry that says, “I must have water, or I will not survive.”
When thirst begins to dominate the mind, it’s hard to think about anything else.
The psalmist used this intense image to describe his longing for God. He was earnestly seeking after God, remembering the moments when God’s presence was deeply felt (v.2). He insisted on praising God and singing of His goodness, declaring that God’s love is “better than life itself.”
In the quiet of the night, as he lay awake, he thought of God. He clung to Him, resting securely in the embrace of God’s strong right hand.
Are you in a season where you are truly thirsting after Him? Like the psalmist, will you seek Him with your whole being? In our modern, highly distracted lives, our seeking after God is often short-lived or intermittent. Yet just as we cannot survive without water, we cannot truly live without Him.
Will you cry out to God with every fibre of your being?
“My soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you,
in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” — Psalm 63:1
We pray this prayer of St Augustine:
Look upon us, O Lord, and let all the darkness of our souls vanish before the beams of your brightness. Fill us with holy love, and open to us the treasures of thy wisdom. All our desire is known unto you, therefore perfect what you have begun, and what your Spirit has awakened us to ask in prayer. We seek your face, turn your face unto us and show us your glory. Then shall our longing be satisfied, and our peace shall be perfect. Amen.
In closing, be blessed by this heartfelt song, The More I Seek You.
The more I seek You The more I find You
The more I find You The more I love You
I wanna sit at Your feet
Drink from the cup in
Your hand Lay back against You and breath
Feel Your heartbeat
This love is so deep
It’s more than I can stand
I melt in Your peace, it’s overwhelming

About This Daily Devotion
This weekday devotion is drawn from the Morning Office and is part of a project initiated by Revd Canon Terry Wong, with contributions from clergy and members across various parishes. Each entry includes selected readings from the appointed Psalm and another Scripture passage, accompanied by a reflection and prayer. An audio option is also available, often ending with a hymn or song. We encourage you to both read and listen.
Our aim is to help Anglicans engage more deeply with our rich liturgical tradition, while meeting the devotional needs of today’s believers. This project began on Ash Wednesday 2025 and is offered on weekdays only.
