Voice: Kae Chee
Today is Tuesday, 21st of October. Let us gather our scattered thoughts and be still in His presence.
May Christ, the true, the only light
banish all darkness from our hearts and minds.
Psalms 89:13-18
You have a mighty arm;
strong is your hand, high your right hand.
14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.
15 Blessed are the people who know the festal shout,
who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face,
16 who exult in your name all the day
and in your righteousness are exalted.
17 For you are the glory of their strength;
by your favor our horn is exalted.
18 For our shield belongs to the Lord,
our king to the Holy One of Israel.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.
A Righteous and Just Foundation
Psalm 89:14
“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.”
How will this day unfold?
For some, the hours ahead may follow a familiar routine. For others, each day brings fresh changes and challenges — and sometimes, a measure of worry.
One blessing of beginning the day with the Psalms is being reminded of the constancy of God. In recent times, the political affairs of the world have been deeply unsettling. Leaders make decisions that can affect our daily lives. And then, there is the power of the crowd — tribal, impulsive, and easily swayed. Once a lie is repeated often enough, it begins to sound like truth. Such masses, in turn, embolden their political champions.
In the midst of all these shifting sands, Psalm 89 gives us a firm foundation:
“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne.”
God’s rule is not fickle or swayed by public opinion. His ways are true, His love steadfast. In Him, we find an unchanging Rock — a sure place on which to anchor our lives.
“Blessed are the people who know the festal shout,
who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.” (v.15)
Those who know the “festal shout” live in constant praise and celebration of God — not of the idols or ideologies of this world. They walk “in the light of His face,” conscious of His presence in every moment. They draw strength from Him and live by His values, not the world’s shifting standards.
May His righteousness and justice become the foundation of our own hearts. With these, we can do more than simply survive our daily challenges — we can be lights that shape the values of our homes, schools, and workplaces.
Today we remember Maria Dyer, born in Malacca to Samuel and Maria Burn Dyer, among the earliest missionaries of the London Missionary Society in this region. The LMS played a key role in shaping early Christian witness in West Malaysia and Singapore.
Maria devoted her life to the education of girls — a revolutionary cause in her time. In 1842, she founded what is today St. Margaret’s School, the oldest girls’ school in Southeast Asia. Through this work, she planted seeds of faith, dignity, and learning that would grow for generations.
Maria later married Hudson Taylor, founder of the China Inland Mission, and continued to serve the Lord faithfully in both Southeast Asia and China. Her life exemplified what it means to build upon God’s righteous and just foundation — one that would support both Church and society long after her time.
A life lived well for Christ always leaves a legacy.
Let us give thanks today to the One “in whose favour our horn is exalted.” (Psalm 89:17)
We close with the Collect of the Day:
Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us your gift of faith
that, forsaking what lies behind and reaching out to that which is before,
we may run the way of your commandments
and win the crown of everlasting joy;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
We end with this hymn by Sarah Groves, He’s Always been Faithful:
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.
Morning by morning, I wake up to find
The power and comfort of God’s hand in mine
Season by season, I watch Him, amazed
In awe of the mystery of His perfect ways
All I have need of, His hand will provide
He’s always been faithful to me
I can’t remember a trial or a pain
He did not recycle to bring me gain
I can’t remember one single regret
In serving God only and trusting His hand
All I have need of, His hand will provide
He’s always been faithful to me
This is my anthem, this is my song
The theme of the stories I’ve heard for so long
God has been faithful, He will be again
His loving compassion, it knows no end
All I have need of, His hand will provide
He’s always been faithful
He’s always been faithful
He’s always been faithful to me
