Today is Tuesday, 26th of March. In this Season of Lent, let us take a moment to be still in His presence.
Psalm 125
Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be moved, but abides forever.
2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the Lord surrounds his people,
from this time forth and forevermore.
3 For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest
on the land allotted to the righteous,
lest the righteous stretch out
their hands to do wrong.
4 Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,
and to those who are upright in their hearts!
5 But those who turn aside to their crooked ways
the Lord will lead away with evildoers!
Peace be upon Israel!
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.
Hebrews 12:14-29
14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;16 that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. 17 For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.18 For you have not come to what may be touched, a blazing fire and darkness and gloom and a tempest 19 and the sound of a trumpet and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that no further messages be spoken to them. 20 For they could not endure the order that was given, “If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned.” 21 Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with fear.” 22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering,23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
25 See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven. 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”27 This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken—that is, things that have been made—in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, 29 for our God is a consuming fire.

Do not refuse Him who is speaking
This is a rich and sobering passage. Take some time to read it again slowly and prayerfully. It is important that we learn to hear His voice daily, and one good practice is to journal what you sense the Lord is saying to you. You may be listening to this while commuting. At the close of the day, return to the Scriptures and spend some time journaling. Some days your journal may be blank, and that is okay.
This passage brings the Word of God to bear on our present lives:
Are we promoting peace rather than strife?
Do we harbor bitterness in our hearts?
Are we sexually immoral?
Then the writer draws our attention to Mount Sinai, where the Israelites faced judgment for their rebellion. From there, he points us forward to Mount Zion, the city of the living God.
One day we shall come before innumerable angels, the faithful gathered in Christ, and Jesus Himself. Just as God spoke at Sinai and shook the earth, so He will speak again. This time, not only the earth, but the heavens also will be shaken. Everything that can be shaken will be removed, except His kingdom. All the vain and sinful things that grip our lives will pass away.
So we are told: “Let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.”
Will we seek first His kingdom now? Will we turn away from the corruption of this passing kingdom and live instead for the kingdom of God?
Let Him speak to you and do not turn His voice away.
🌿 Thought for Lent
Let the Lord speak to you. Is there bitterness within you that is causing strife in your family or among your friends? Is there a pattern of sexual immorality from which you need to repent? Let the fire of the Spirit cleanse you. It is far better to face the fire of His healing now than the fire of His judgment on that day.
We pray the Collect for Ash Wednesday:
Almighty and everlasting God,
you hate nothing that you have made
and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent:
create and make in us new and contrite hearts
that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our brokenness,
may receive from you, the God of all mercy,
perfect remission and forgiveness;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

About This Daily Devotion
This weekday devotion is drawn from the Morning Office and is part of a project initiated by Revd Canon Terry Wong, with contributions from clergy and members across various parishes.
