Alban is the first Christian in Britan whose name is recorded. According to Bede, he was a layman of the Roman city of Verulamium who gave shelter to a Christian priest fleeing form his persecutors. When soldiers came, Alban disguised himself as the priest. He was arrested in the priest’s place
He was condemned and martyred on the hill where the abbey church of St Alban’s now stand. The date is assumed to be 304 AD.
