Voice: Mylene
Today is Thursday, the 7th of May.
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Colossians 3:1
Psalm 57:
Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,
for in you my soul takes refuge;
in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge,
till the storms of destruction pass by.
2 I cry out to God Most High,
to God who fulfills his purpose for me.
3 He will send from heaven and save me;
he will put to shame him who tramples on me. Selah
God will send out his steadfast love and his faithfulness!4 My soul is in the midst of lions;
I lie down amid fiery beasts—
the children of man, whose teeth are spears and arrows,
whose tongues are sharp swords.5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
Let your glory be over all the earth!6 They set a net for my steps;
my soul was bowed down.
They dug a pit in my way,
but they have fallen into it themselves. Selah
7 My heart is steadfast, O God,
my heart is steadfast!
I will sing and make melody!
8 Awake, my glory!
Awake, O harp and lyre!
I will awake the dawn!
9 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to you among the nations.
10 For your steadfast love is great to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the clouds.11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
Let your glory be over all the earth!Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.
Numbers 13:17-20, 25-33
17 Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, “Go up into the Negeb and go up into the hill country, 18 and see what the land is, and whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many,19 and whether the land that they dwell in is good or bad, and whether the cities that they dwell in are camps or strongholds, 20 and whether the land is rich or poor, and whether there are trees in it or not. Be of good courage and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes.
25 At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. 26 And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there.29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.”
30 But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” 31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” 32 So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”

Facing your giants
When Moses sent twelve spies into Canaan, they all encountered the same reality. For forty days, they saw the same fortified cities, walked the same terrain, and tasted the same rich fruit from a land flowing with milk and honey. Yet when they returned, two completely different perspectives emerged.
Ten of the spies allowed fear to distort their vision. They magnified the obstacles, describing the land as one that would devour them and its inhabitants as intimidating giants. In their own eyes, they became like grasshoppers—small, powerless, and defeated. Fear, once entertained, like a contagious infection, spread quickly among the people.
Caleb, however, saw the very same land—but through the lens of faith. He stood against the tide of fear and boldly declared that they should go up and take possession of it. His confidence was not naive optimism, but a deep trust in God’s promise and presence. Caleb understood that if the Lord was with them, no obstacle was insurmountable.
The truth remains: your view shapes your response. This is going to sound cliche, but “your attitude will affect your altitude. “What you focus on will influence how you live and what you choose.
Today, we face our own “giants”—circumstances that seem overwhelming, uncertain, or intimidating. The difference between shrinking back in fear and stepping forward in faith often lies not in the situation, but in our perspective.
Scripture calls us not to conform to the patterns of fear around us, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). This renewal is intentional. It comes through immersing ourselves in God’s Word, surrounding ourselves with faith-filled voices, and cultivating a heart that trusts Him daily.
Will you see yourself as a grasshopper—or stand like Caleb, a child of God anchored in His promises?
Prayer
Lord, when we face overwhelming challenges, guard our hearts from fear. Keep us from seeing ourselves as small and defeated. Help us not to spread negativity or doubt, but to speak life and faith into every situation. Renew our minds daily through Your Word. Give us the courage and confidence of Caleb, trusting that You are with us and will lead us forward. May we see as You see, and walk faithfully in Your promises. Amen.
Be blessed by this song, Be Still
Be still and know
That the Lord is in control
Be still, my soul
Stand and watch as giants fall
I won’t be afraid for You are here
You silence all my fear
I won’t be afraid, You don’t let go
Be still, my heart, and know
I won’t be afraid
Be still and trust
What the Lord has said is done
Find rest, don’t strive
Watch as faith and grace align
I won’t be afraid for You are here
You silence all my fear
I won’t be afraid, You don’t let go
Be still my heart and know
I won’t be afraid
I won’t be afraid
Surely love and mercy
Your peace and kindness
Will follow me
Will follow me
Surely love and mercy
Your peace and kindness
Will follow me
Will follow me
Surely love and mercy
Your peace and kindness
Will follow me
Will follow me
Surely love and mercy
Your peace and kindness
Will follow me
Will follow me
Your love surrounds me
Your love surrounds me, here
Your love surrounds me
Your love surrounds me, here
Your love surrounds me
Your love surrounds me, here
Be Still

About This Daily Devotion
This weekday devotion is drawn from the Morning Office and is part of a project initiated by Revd Canon Terry Wong, with contributions from clergy and members across various parishes. Each entry includes selected readings from the appointed Psalm and another Scripture passage, accompanied by a reflection and prayer. An audio option is also available, often ending with a hymn or song. We encourage you to both read and listen.
Our aim is to help Anglicans engage more deeply with our rich liturgical tradition, while meeting the devotional needs of today’s believers. This project began on Ash Wednesday 2025 and is offered on weekdays only.
