Voice: Terry
Today is Thursday, 4th of June. Take a moment to be still in His presence.
We pray:
Blessed are you, creator of all,
to you be praise and glory for ever.
As your dawn renews the face of the earth
bringing light and life to all creation,
may we rejoice in this day you have made;
as we wake refreshed from the depths of sleep,
open our eyes to behold your presence
and strengthen our hands to do your will,
that the world may rejoice and give you praise.
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Amen
Psalm 147:1-11
1 Praise the Lord !
For it is good to sing praises to our God;
for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting.
2The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
3He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.
4He determines the number of the stars;
he gives to all of them their names.
5 Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
his understanding is beyond measure.
6The Lord lifts up the humble;
he casts the wicked to the ground.
7 Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
make melody to our God on the lyre!
8He covers the heavens with clouds;
he prepares rain for the earth;
he makes grass grow on the hills.
9He gives to the beasts their food,
and to the young ravens that cry.
10His delight is not in the strength of the horse,
nor his pleasure in the legs of a man,
11but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
in those who hope in his steadfast love.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.
Deuteronomy 8:11-16
11“Take care lest you forget the Lord your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today, 12lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them, 13and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, 14then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, 15who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock, 16who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end.
This is the Word of the Lord
Thanks be to God
Remind me Dear Lord
“Remember, I’m human, and humans forget.”
That line from an old hymn has stayed with me over the years. It was a favourite of the Senior Pastor of the first church I joined when I became a Christian in 1976, and it still comes back to mind from time to time.
Today’s word from Deuteronomy carries that same warning: “Lest you forget.”
And how do we forget the Lord our God? Moses says it plainly: by not keeping His commandments and His statutes.
But why do we forget?
Because of multiplication.
Our flocks multiply. Silver and gold multiply. All that we have multiplies. We prosper.
Then our hearts can become “lifted up.”
There is a lifting up in worship: “Lift up your hearts.”
But there is another lifting up: the swelling of pride.
A grateful heart says, “The Lord has provided.”
A lifted-up heart says, “Look what I have built.”
And life is good for many of us in Singapore. Money and investments continue to pour into our tiny nation, all the more when other parts of the world feel uncertain and unstable. It is easy for such success to get to our heads. We begin to think: We have achieved all this.
Like Israel in the wilderness, there was a time when many of us had to pray and depend on the Lord for the daily necessities of life. We knew our need. We felt our dependence.
But for many of us, those days seem far behind.
And so we can forget the goodness of the Lord.
That is why Moses exhorts us to recall. To remember what God has done. To remember why He tested us and humbled us in the wilderness. Because in the end, who we are before God matters far more than what we have accumulated.
In today’s lectionary we also give thanks for the institution of Holy Communion.
As it is often said, the world drinks to forget.
Christians drink to remember.
We come to the Lord’s Table to remember Christ:
His body broken for us,
His blood shed for us,
His mercy that saved us,
His faithfulness that has carried us through every wilderness.
And in remembering Him, our hearts are kept from pride.
So today, whatever we have, and wherever we are in life—
let us remember Christ.
Let me share this old song with you, Remind me dear Lord, sung by The Asidors. May this be our prayer.
The things that I love
I hold dear to my heart
They are borrowed and
Not mine at all
Jesus only let me use them
To brighten my life
So remind me, remind me dear Lord
Roll back the curtain of memory now and then
Show me where you brought me from and
Where i could have been
Just remember I’m a human and human’s forget
So remind me, remind me dear Lord
Nothing good have i done
To deserve God’s own Son
I’m not worthy of the scars
In His hands
Yet he chose the road to Calvary
To die in my stead
Why He loved me i can’t understand
Roll back the curtain of memory now and then
Show me where you brought me from and
Where i could have been
Just remember I’m a human and human’s forget
So remind me, remind me dear Lord
Just remember I’m a human and human’s forget
So remind me, remind me dear Lord

About This Daily Devotion
This weekday devotion is drawn from the Morning Office and is part of a project initiated by Revd Canon Terry Wong, with contributions from clergy and members across various parishes. Each entry includes selected readings from the appointed Psalm and another Scripture passage, accompanied by a reflection and prayer. An audio option is also available, often ending with a hymn or song. We encourage you to both read and listen. Unless otherwise stated, the reflections are written by Revd Wong.
Our aim is to help Anglicans engage more deeply with our rich liturgical tradition, while meeting the devotional needs of today’s believers. This project began on Ash Wednesday 2025 and is offered on weekdays only.
For feedback, please write to us at info@mpcc.org.sg. We also welcome donations to MPCC. Information on how you may give can be found in this link.
