8 June Mon- Psalm 27:4

Voice:

Today is Monday, 8th of June.

Our minds are easily distracted and we find it difficult to be still. Take a few moments of quietness. Yes there are many things to be done. On-going issues to think about. But will you dedicate this time to listen to the Lord and talk with Him?

We pray this collect:
O Almighty God, who pours out on all who desire it
the spirit of grace and of supplication:
Deliver us, when we draw near to You,
from coldness of heart and wanderings of mind,
that with steadfast thoughts and kindled affections
we may worship You in spirit and in truth;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Psalm 27

The  Lord  is my  light and my  salvation;
    whom shall I fear?
The  Lord  is the stronghold  of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?

2When evildoers assail me
to  eat up my flesh,
my adversaries and foes,
it is they who stumble and fall.

3    Though an army encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear;
though war arise against me,
yet  I will be confident.

4    One thing have I asked of the  Lord ,
that will I seek after:
that I may  dwell in the house of the  Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon  the beauty of the  Lord
and to inquire  in his temple.

5For he will  hide me in his shelter
in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
he will  lift me high upon a rock.

6And now my  head shall be lifted up
above my enemies all around me,
and I will offer in his tent
sacrifices with shouts of  joy;
    I will sing and make melody to the  Lord .

7    Hear, O  Lord , when I cry aloud;
be gracious to me and answer me!

8You have said,  “Seek  my face.”
My heart says to you,
“Your face,  Lord , do I seek.”

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.

Reflection on Psalm 27:4
“One thing…”

We have come across this phrase many times in Scripture.

Jesus told Martha that only one thing is necessary.
St Paul spoke of forsaking everything else in his pursuit of knowing Christ.
Joshua challenged the people: “Choose this day whom you will serve.”

Again and again, Scripture brings us back to what matters most.

Our Christian lives can easily become filled with many good and worthy desires.

We want to see society transformed.
We want poverty to be eradicated.
We want our churches to grow.
We long to see discipleship flourish in every form we know.
We want to deepen our understanding of doctrine.
We hope the members of our Cell will thrive in their daily walk with God.

And of course we desire better marriages, better grades, and healthier rhythms at work and at home.

These are all good things. They matter.

The danger is not in caring about these things. The danger is losing sight of Christ Himself.

The psalmist says: “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after…”
His deepest longing is simply to dwell in the house of the Lord, to remain in His presence all the days of his life.

That is another way of saying: forever.

At the heart of the Christian life is this one thing: to behold the Lord and remain near Him. And it is this one thing that rightly orders everything else.

Some read the Bible superficially and imagine heaven as endless worship and conclude, “How boring.”

But no—if life in this world can already be so diverse, creative, joyful and full of wonder, how much more the life to come in God’s renewed creation.

Yet it will only be truly full because at the centre of it all is not ourselves, but our Creator and Redeemer.

When we devote ourselves only to ourselves, the life we try so hard to grasp slips through our fingers. Left to ourselves, we become selfish, short-sighted, and self-destructive.

But when our hearts are fixed on “the beauty of the Lord,” when we seek Him and inquire in His temple, something changes.

Everything else begins to find its proper place.

And we begin to experience what Christ promised: life in all its fullness.

We say the Collect for today:

O God,
the strength of all those who put their trust in you,
mercifully accept our prayers and,
because through the weakness of our mortal nature
we can do no good thing without you,
grant us the help of your grace,
that in the keeping of your commandments
we may please you both in will and deed;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Be blessed by this song, Jesus I come, by the Awaken Generation.

If you’re calling me, I will answer
If you’re bidding me to come, I will come
If you’re leading me into deeper waters
May I not refuse

Jesus I come, I surrender
All for Your glory, I give my life
Here in this moment
I’m marked forever
I am Yours

If you’re drawing me… closer
If you’re lifting me… higher
If you’re bringing me into greater purpose
May I not refuse

Bridge
Just a glimpse of your glory
And in my heart I know
That I won’t let go
No, I won’t let go
Just a taste of your goodness
And in my heart I know
I’m not letting go
I’m not letting go
