Voice: Bernice
Today is Thursday, 22nd of October. Take a moment to be still in His presence.
We pray:
O Almighty God, who pourest out on all who desire it the spirit of grace and of supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to thee, from coldness of heart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled affections we may worship thee in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Psalm 143:1-6
Hear my prayer, O Lord;
give ear to my pleas for mercy!
In your faithfulness answer me, in your righteousness!
2 Enter not into judgment with your servant,
for no one living is righteous before you.
3 For the enemy has pursued my soul;
he has crushed my life to the ground;
he has made me sit in darkness like those long dead.
4 Therefore my spirit faints within me;
my heart within me is appalled.
5 I remember the days of old;
I meditate on all that you have done;
I ponder the work of your hands.
6 I stretch out my hands to you;
my soul thirsts for you like a parched land.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as It was in the beginning, is
now, and shall be forever. Amen.
1 Timothy 4:1-10
1Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, 3who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.
6If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. 7Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; 8for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. 9The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. 10For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.
This is the Word of the Lord
Thanks be to God
As we read First Timothy, we may understand “words of faith” and “good doctrine” simply as bodies of teaching or statements of belief. Yet the early church held belief and practice closely together. What we believe shapes how we live, and how we live reveals what we truly believe.
Paul tells Timothy to have nothing to do with “irreverent and silly myths”. Elsewhere in his letters, Paul warns against teachings rooted in myths, speculation and misplaced confidence in religious observance. For some Jewish believers, following Christ meant re-examining deeply familiar traditions in the light of the gospel. Beliefs and practices woven into a lifetime would not have been easy to reconsider.
We face a similar challenge today. Inherited assumptions and cultural values can shape our choices without our noticing. Some may hinder us from living fully for Christ.
What might these be in your life? Consider what your everyday choices reveal. How do you spend your time and money? What makes you feel successful, secure or accepted? Are these things shaped more by the culture around you than by the Word of God?
Take some time to be still before the Lord. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what you may struggle to see. With a humble and open heart, allow His light to expose what needs to change, and His grace to help you respond.
We pray the Collect for the Day:
God, the giver of life,
whose Holy Spirit wells up within your Church:
by the Spirit’s gifts equip us to live the gospel of Christ
and make us eager to do your will,
that we may share with the whole creation the joys of eternal life;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
Be blessed by this song, Jesus I come, by the Awaken Generation.
If you’re calling me, I will answer
If you’re bidding me to come, I will come
If you’re leading me into deeper waters
May I not refuse
Jesus I come, I surrender
All for Your glory, I give my life
Here in this moment
I’m marked forever
I am Yours
If you’re drawing me… closer
If you’re lifting me… higher
If you’re bringing me into greater purpose
May I not refuse
Bridge
Just a glimpse of your glory
And in my heart I know
That I won’t let go
No, I won’t let go
Just a taste of your goodness
And in my heart I know
I’m not letting go
I’m not letting go

About This Daily Devotion
This weekday devotion is drawn from the Morning Office and is part of a project initiated by Revd Canon Terry Wong, with contributions from clergy and members across various parishes. Each entry includes selected readings from the appointed Psalm and another Scripture passage, accompanied by a reflection and prayer. An audio option is also available, often ending with a hymn or song. We encourage you to both read and listen. Unless otherwise stated, the reflections are written by Revd Wong.
Our aim is to help Anglicans engage more deeply with our rich liturgical tradition, while meeting the devotional needs of today’s believers. This project began on Ash Wednesday 2025 and is offered on weekdays only.
